第一部分:SBQ(材料阅读)

2.同主题的整套SBQ对比分析:
很多SBQ题换汤不换药,用类似的sources,也需要类似的套路去分析。所以如果手头资料有限,可以把关于同一个topic的所有的sources放在一起,然后把题也放在一起,看这套题的问题如果放在另外一套source的背景下怎么回答。非常有用的sourceanalysis练习!
3.整理standard phrasing:
(a)对于inference questions (what can youlearn from the source/ what is the message/purpuse of the source):
通常答案有一个固定的架构:
I.Provenance(determines the slant and perspective)+ command verb (to convince, criticise,condemn, justify, credit, praise, discredit, mock...)
II.+Audience(congress, government, public),
III.+Message(eg, North Korea started the war/Stalin’s five year plan brough negative socialimpacts etc).
(b)要准确掌握message或者SBQ的考点ingeneral:
强烈推荐整理总结SBQ章节的contentious point,(eg, Who was the winner in the CubanMissile crisis and who was responsible for starting the crisis; who started theKorean war; was the Nazi rule beneficial/harmful in various aspects in German;Was Stalin’s rule beneficial/harmful in various aspects in Soviet Union)
然后整理相关的课本evidence来supporteach sideofthe argument.

Example 1: Korean War Perspectives
Analysis 1:Who started it? (Which player?)
首先要搞清楚Korean War的主要参与者(player):North Korea (DPRK), South Korea (ROK), USA, USSR,China (PRC)
不同的player对这个问题有不同的perspective:DPRK blamed ROK; ROK, USA blamed DPRK; …
需要大概了解support这些不同perspective不同claim的理由:
(a)ROK blamed DPRK: DPRKinitiated/triggeredthe warby invading ROK in June 1950; (*motivation: national unification under Kim’scommunist banner and authority; personal ambition and power)
(b)PRC’s part in the start of the war:enabler—thoughnot direct causation(PRC did not initiate or provide the impetuses forthe war), it certainlyprovidedsupport for DPRK.(* extra knowledge: DPRK soldiers gainedexperience fighting alongside the Chinese against the Japanese as well asChiang Kai-Shek’s Kuomingtang forces during the Chinese Civil War.)
(c)USSR’s role: givingacquiescenceto Kim Il Sung’s request to invade the South, despite being reluctant initially(Kim asked thrice before Stalin permitted). Alsoprovidedmilitary supplies(expertise, weaponsetc) to DPRK in the lead-up to the offensive.
(d)ROK:no directcausality.Did notinitiate or triggerthe war (being invaded by DPRK instead—a historical fact/contextual knowledge toprove DPRK’s claim that ROK started the war unreliable). ***(extra)However,had theintentionto start the war (Syngman Rhee asked USA for permissionbut was refused) and Rhee’s intention/desire to unify the Korea peninsula underhis government had responsibility indetermining themotivations for War(i.e. unification).
(e)USA:no intention and thusno direct responsibilityfor starting the war, because USA waswary of provoking Soviet response (possible nuclear confrontation)

一定要分析清楚题目!看标准答案或找老师consult,把题目按(a)topicand (b)command word分类,找到题目的规律,才能提高答题效率,每一句话都回答问题。
2.自己总结evaluation(那种argumentative essay最后辩证分析的段落,可以自己写然后找老师改,或者用现有标准答案里写的好的,使你的文章脱颖而出)然后背下来,考试的时候才能下笔如有神。
3.(with caution)听老师的押题建议/看其他学校prelim的出题trend总结出出题高频chapters,多准备一下出题概率高chapters
